What is an ENG1 medical?
The ENG1 is the medical fitness certificate required by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) for many seafarers and yacht crew.
The examination assesses whether you are medically fit to work safely at sea, including undertaking safety-critical and emergency duties.
Appointments must be carried out in person, and most appointments take approximately 1 hour.
Please note: Booking an ENG1 appointment does not guarantee that an ENG1 certificate will be issued. The examination is an independent assessment carried out in accordance with UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) medical standards. A certificate can only be issued if you meet the required medical standards. You can read more about this here.
What does the examination include?
Your ENG1 medical will include:
Medical history review
Blood pressure measurement
Height and weight
Vision testing
Colour vision assessment (where required)
Hearing assessment
Urinalysis
Physical examination
Review of medications and existing medical conditions
The ENG1 is an important safety assessment, not simply a formality.
The standards set by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency are rigorous and designed to protect seafarers, passengers and vessels. While most candidates are found fit for duty, ENG1 certificates are not issued automatically and some medical conditions may require additional information, restrictions or referral for specialist advice. You can read more about this here.
Our role as MCA Approved Doctors is to assess every candidate fairly, professionally and consistently against the published MCA standards.
